Wednesday, 16 February 1927

Dáil Éireann Debate
Vol. 18 No. 6

TADHG O MURCHADHA: Information on Timothy J Murphy  Zoom on Timothy J Murphy  asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has received representations from prominent people in the district in favour of a daily delivery of letters in the Reagrove and Roberts Cove districts (Kinsale); whether he is aware that two postmen, namely, [522] the rural postman from Kinsale, and an auxiliary postman from Minane Bridge, deliver letters at Tracton daily, even at the same houses, and if he will arrange that the daily delivery withdrawn from the above-named districts be restored.

MINISTER for POSTS and TELEGRAPHS (Mr. Walsh): Information on James Joseph Walsh  Zoom on James Joseph Walsh  Owing to the postal services being unremunerative, frequency of delivery in the districts in question was reduced from six days to three days weekly in 1924. Application has been made on a couple of occasions for a restoration of facilities, but this could only be granted by incurring heavy expense which would not be warranted. The present service in the area is similar to that generally afforded to places of corresponding importance throughout An Saorstát. So far as the information at present available goes, delivery is not made by two postmen at any house in Tracton, but I am having inquiry made on the point and will communicate further with the Deputy in due course.
