Dáil Éireann Debate
Vol. 99 No. 14

First Page Previous Page Page of 26 Next Page Last Page

Mr. O'Neill: Information on Eamonn O'Neill  Zoom on Eamonn O'Neill  asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he has received representations from Passage West and other [1702] areas in the Cork neighbourhood, complaining of the excessive bus fares charged in those areas, which fares are much in excess of the rates charged for comparable journeys in the Dublin area, of the lack of proper accommodation at the bus termini in the area, of the lack of control of queues, and of general discomfort suffered by passengers at these termini; and if he will cause Córas Iompair Éireann to have the grievances remedied.

Mr. Lemass: Information on Seán F. Lemass  Zoom on Seán F. Lemass  Representations have recently been received in regard to the bus fares and the accommodation provided for passengers in the Cork area. The bus fares are within the statutory maxima prescribed by the Road Transport Regulations, 1932. The question of the general level of these fares is at present under review. Improved facilities for passengers at the main bus termini are included in the reorganisation schemes at present being prepared by Córas Iompair Eireann. I have no function in regard to the regulation of bus queues which is a matter for enforcement by the Gárda Síochána.
