Mr. Dillon:
asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what stockpiling was done by the Sea Fisheries Association of nets, trawls, seine nets, rope, blocks, anchors and anchor chains, and other stores; whether the prices of these stores moved up since their purchase; and, if so, whether the benefit of the low prices is still being made available to the fishermen.
Mr. Bartley:
I am advised that the Irish Sea Fisheries Association, Limited, stockpiled in 1951 stores of the kinds mentioned to the value of about £33,000. For some time after the purchases were made, prices tended to increase; but lately there has been a tendency towards a decrease. The price charged to fishermen for a particular article is based on the average cost price of the stock of that kind on hands and may, therefore, be somewhat higher or somewhat lower than the current commercial price according to the trend of prices.
