Mr. Palmer: Information on Patrick W. Palmer  Zoom on Patrick W. Palmer  asked the Minister for Education if he will give the percentage increase to date in the maximum salary of a highly-efficient assistant teacher over the 1939 figure.

Mr. Bartley: Information on Gerald Bartley  Zoom on Gerald Bartley  The highly-efficient rating for national teachers was abolished from 1st April, 1949 and all teachers whose work is estimated as satisfactory may now proceed to the maximum of the appropriate scale. The maxima of the present salary scales in operation since 1st April, 1953 represent the following percentage increases on the maxima of the scales in operation in 1939 for highly-efficient assistant teachers:—

Married men 94.4
Single men 63.6
Women 98.9
