Mr. M.P. Murphy: Information on Michael Pat Murphy  Zoom on Michael Pat Murphy  asked the Minister for Agriculture whether in view of the Taoiseach's statement in Brussels that Ireland's horticultural industry is of rather recent growth and may not find it easy to adapt itself rapidly to Common Market conditions he will outline the plans and projects his Department have under consideration for the strengthening and improvement of this industry to meet EEC competition.

Mr. Smith: Information on Patrick Smith  Zoom on Patrick Smith  The Council of Ministers of the European Economic Community adopted last month regulations for the establishment of a common market in fruit and vegetables. As in the case of other agricultural commodities, my Department is arranging to have these regulations examined in conjunction with the producer and processing interests concerned, with a view to assessing their implications for this country and to considering the steps which might be necessary to adjust our horticultural [81] industry to the conditions likely to prevail in the Common Market.
