Mr. Byrne:
asked the Minister for Education what is the present position in regard to the proposed rebuilding of Belgrove girls' national school, Clontarf, Dublin; if plans have now been approved; and when building operations will commence.
Dr. Hillery:
Sketch plans have now been approved. It will be necessary for the manager's architect to prepare detailed working drawings and have bills of quantities taken out before tenders can be invited.
I am unable to say at this stage when building operations will commence.
Mr. Byrne:
Can the Minister not give us some information about when the work will commence?
Dr. Hillery:
As I have said, sketch plans have now been approved and are in the hands of the manager's architects.
Mr. Byrne:
Is the Minister aware this building is structurally unsound— that it is in a dangerous condition?
Dr. Hillery:
I had eight prefabricated classrooms erected because of a [1914] report made to me and because of difficulties in getting suitable plans. Now, the architects have sketch plans in hand.
Mr. Byrne:
Is the Minister aware the old building is still in use, that a ceiling in one of the classrooms in the old building collapsed last week, that it was providential several children were not seriously injured and that this is a matter of extreme urgency which deserves far greater attention than it appears to have been getting?
Dr. Hillery:
As a result of a report, I asked for prefabricated classrooms pending the erection of the new building. The sketch plans for the new building are now in the hands of the manager's architects but I shall ask for another inspection of the old building.
Mr. Byrne:
The Minister should also arrange for more prefabricated classrooms.
Dr. Hillery:
I shall ask for another report.
