5.

Mr. Harte: Information on Patrick D. Harte  Zoom on Patrick D. Harte  asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to a statement by the Governor of the Bank of Ireland that the public sector has absorbed almost all the credit facilities available to the exclusion of the private sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mr. J. Lynch: Information on John Lynch  Zoom on John Lynch  I have seen the statement referred to by the Deputy. The difficulties in financing public capital requirements in 1965, which involved heavy demands by the Exchequer on the banking system during the year, were outlined in the paper “Capital Budget, 1966” published last week. As indicated in that paper the Government recognise the importance of ensuring that public sector requirements should not absorb an undue proportion of available banking resources in 1966. It is intended that recourse by the Exchequer to the banking system for this year will be significantly less than last year.
