26.

Mr. O.J. Flanagan: Information on Oliver J. Flanagan  Zoom on Oliver J. Flanagan  asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the term “Parliament” is applied in any of the Common Market treaties with reference to the EEC deliberative assembly; and, if not, if he will arrange that the correct designation of this institution is used in documents and publications issued by the Government, in view of the fact that the use of the term “Parliament” may give the impression that the EEC possesses a real parliament in the sense of an elected body with powers to make laws.

Dr. Cruise-O'Brien: Information on Conor Cruise-O'Brien  Zoom on Conor Cruise-O'Brien  The term “Assembly” is used in the basic treaties establishing the European Communities. However, in 1962 the Assembly itself adopted a resolution changing its name to “European Parliament”. This term has since been observed by all the institutions of the Communities, including the Court of Justice, and by the member States generally. The Government adhere, therefore, to the generally accepted designation of this institution as the European Parliament.
