4.

Mr. Lemass: Information on Noel T. Lemass  Zoom on Noel T. Lemass  asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the world energy situation, he considers that the Irish coal industry should be expanded.

Mr. Bruton: Information on John Bruton  Zoom on John Bruton  I consider that any native coal resources which are capable of being worked economically in the present circumstances should be fully developed. The potential of the Leinster and Connacht coalfields was thoroughly explored in the course [551] of extensive diamond drilling surveys carried out between 1959 and 1963. These surveys indicated considerable reserves of minable anthracite but the limited thickness of seams, coupled with their depth from the surface, discouraged colliery operators from undertaking development. The potential of the Sileveardagh coalfield has also been fully investigated. Every effort is being made to draw the attention of potential operators to these reserves and every incentive possible is being offered to encourage expansion in further exploration and development. I would, of course, welcome applications from competent enterprises for facilities to work available State-owned reserves, if considered viable in present circumstances.
