Dáil Eireann Debate
Dr. O'Connell: asked the Taoiseach the number of people presently employed in food processing in Ireland; the percentage of total work force this figure represents; and whether this has shown an increase or decrease since January 1973.
The Taoiseach: : The most up-to-date information available on a comparable basis is that compiled in the quarterly industrial inquiry covering firms with three or more persons employed in manufacturing industries.
The total number of persons engaged in food manufacturing industries in December, 1977 (the latest period for which these data are available at present) is estimated at 41.7 thousand and represented 21.1 per cent of the total employment in all manufacturing industries, for the same period. In December 1972 the total number of persons engaged in food manufacturing industries was 43.7 thousand representing 21.9 per cent of the total employment in all manufacturing industries for that period.
