Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Celtic Sea Herring Catches.
Naval Service boardings and inspections do not substantiate the allegation.
The question relates to an allegation made by the IFO. I have answered that question, and the Deputy is now raising a new matter.
The answer I have given is that the allegations have not been substantiated by the boardings and inspections carried out by the Naval Service.
We could have claims from all over the place. I cannot follow up every claim. The Deputy knows there are boardings on a fairly regular basis. There have been quite a large number of boardings of Dut...
Common sense should tell the Deputy that it is not possible to give a 100 per cent guarantee. We have been trying to expand our protection fleet at a fairly rapid rate in order to provide a greater d...
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workers' Demonstration.
In response to a request from the Garda Síochána an Army recovery vehicle, with the necessary military personnel, was made available on 25 August 1978, with instructions to tow away vehicles if reques...
The circumstances of this case have been explained by the Garda in a press release and by the Minister for Justice in a letter to the secretary of the union involved. The question of the Army coming ...
It would be wrong for Deputy Browne to seek to convey abroad the impression that whenever a peaceful protest march will be planned the Army will be brought on the streets. That seems to be the implica...
The Deputy raises a valid point. The non-availability of this type of equipment has, I think, since been dealt with and the Garda are now well equipped to deal with such a situation themselves.
It is not a precedent for the Army to come to the aid of the civil power when requested.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Third Motor Squadron.
It is not proposed to move the Third Motor Squadron from its present location in Clonmel.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Women's Service Corps.
As I have already indicated, the Government are committed to the establishment of a Women's Service Corps as part of the Defence Forces.
It might be better if the Deputy waited until the legislation is before the House. It is my intention to have it here as soon as possible. There are many questions one could ask but it is not fair t...
The Deputy had better wait for the legislation.
Accommodation as necessary will be provided for the Women's Service Corps. The type and extent of new buildings to be erected are under consideration.
I hope at a later stage to be able to give that type of information.
We are very advanced in the planning of it but the legislation comes first. I want the authority of the House before I discuss details.
I have said that planning is at a very advanced stage.
I have indicated to the House that I intend to come forward with legislation and it will be a decision of this House as to whether there will be a women's corps in the Army or not.
If the Deputy opposes or if the Fine Gael Party oppose the establishment of a Women's Corps in the Army, let the Deputy say so.
There has been no such advice against the establishment of the corps. If the Deputy is against it, let him say it.
I shall answer questions that are directed through the Chair.
As the liability for military service will be undifferentiated in the case of male and female members of the Defence Forces it is the intention that their rates of pay and related conditions of servic...
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - McKee Barracks, Dublin.
There is a plot comprising about one acre adjacent to the married quarters at McKee Park, Black-horse Avenue, Dublin. On recent inspection this plot was found to be in reasonably tidy condition with ...
I understand they intend to accept it but they have not actually formally done so yet. They are interested in taking it over.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naval Searches.
A ban on herring fishing in the Celtic Sea has been in force since 6 February 1978. To ensure full compliance with the ban, it is necessary to inspect vessels of all countries fishing in the area. ...
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Band.
A military guard of honour attended upon the Minister for Education on the occasion in question following a request by the manager of the school. It is the normal practice to provide an Army band, wh...
If the situation at the time is such that the military authorities find they can meet the request then it will be favourably considered. The request is not made very often. From my point of view I a...
It is the Deputy who cares to be facetious.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Contingent in Lebanon.
It is proposed that the contingent to replace the Irish contingent at present serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon will consist of 60 officers, two chaplains and 687 men—a total of...
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Armed Escorts.
Pursuant to their role of rendering aid to the civil power, the Defence Forces give assistance to the Garda Síochána in escorting movements of cash. The arrangements for such assistance are kept unde...
It has not been the policy to make information of this kind available and it is not my intention to make the information requested available now.
I assure the Deputy that arrangements for assistance of this kind will be kept under constant review.
