Dr. O'Hanlon:
asked the Minister for Labour the number of man days lost through strikes in the years 1976, 1977, and to the end of September 1978.

The Central Statistics Office is the official source of statistics relating to industrial disputes. According to figures published by that office the number of man days lost as a result of industrial disputes during the years 1976 and 1977 was 776,949 and 442,145 respectively.
Statistics are not yet available from the Central Statistics Office concerning the industrial disputes during 1978. My Department estimate, however, that 400,000 man days were lost as a result of strikes during the first nine months of 1978.

The Central Statistics Office is the official source of statistics relating to industrial disputes. Statistics are not yet available from that office concerning industrial disputes in 1978. The number of strikes in each of the years 1967-1977 was as follows:

The Central Statistics Office figures do not differentiate between official and unofficial strikes.
Since 1976 my Department has been keeping approximated figures in relation to industrial disputes. The Department's records show that 122 strikes took place in the first nine months of 1978 and that the percentage of strikes during 1976, 1977 and January to September 1978 which were unofficial was 68 per cent, 64 per cent and 67 per cent, respectively.
