Mr. Bruton:
asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the percentage of the total revenue of CIE derived from all Exchequer sources, including the Departments of Social Welfare and Education.
Minister for Tourism and Transport (Mr. Faulkner):
I have been informed by CIE that out of the board's total revenue of £89.069 million in 1977, the latest year for which audited accounts are available, the amount earned from Exchequer sources was £14,935 million or 16.7 per cent. This included payments under the free travel schemes administered by the Departments of Social Welfare, Education and Defence and payments in respect of the carriage of mails and ground limestone.
In addition, CIE received a State subvention of £33.2 million in 1977 under subhead D.1 of my Department's Vote.
