315.

Mr. Kenny: Information on Enda Kenny  Zoom on Enda Kenny  asked the Minister for Education if meetings have been held regarding the establishment of long-distance walking routes in Ireland, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education (Mr. Wilson): Information on John P. Wilson  Zoom on John P. Wilson  The Long Distance Walking Routes Committee, which was established to consider the measures that might be taken towards the establishment of long-distance walking paths in Ireland for the benefit of those who enjoy walking as a recreation, held its first meeting in June 1978 and has met on nine occasions since then.

Progress to date has been very satisfactory and the identification of a first walking route of approximately 40 miles in the Wicklow area is at an advanced stage.

Arising out of my discussion with Lord Melchett in Belfast in December last the Walking Committee are to meet shortly with their counterparts in the North to discuss matters of common interest, including the extension of the Ulster Way into County Donegal and other Border counties.
