Mr. Boland: Information on John Boland  Zoom on John Boland  asked the Minister for Social Welfare (i) the estimated number of UK old age pensioners living alone in this country and (ii) the estimated cost of extending the telephone rental allowance scheme to them.

Minister for Social Welfare (Dr. Woods): Information on Michael J. Woods  Zoom on Michael J. Woods  (i) The estimated number of UK old age pensioners living alone in this country is 3,400.

(ii) The estimated annual cost of extending the free telephone rental allowance scheme to them is £31,000.
