2.

Mr. M. Cosgrave: Information on Michael Joe Cosgrave  Zoom on Michael Joe Cosgrave  asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received an application from Dublin Corporation for £1.25 million to combat the severe problem of flooding in the Baldoyle area; and when it is hoped to make the finance available to Dublin Corporation.

Mr. Kavanagh: Information on Liam Kavanagh  Zoom on Liam Kavanagh  A loan application for £1.25 million was submitted to my Department in November 1984 by Dublin Corporation in respect of a proposed flood relief scheme for the Baldoyle area.

The corporation have been requested to submit to my Department a detailed report setting out the problems involved at Baldoyle and their proposals to deal with them. On receipt of this information the proposal will be further considered.

[1364]Mr. M. Cosgrave: Information on Michael Joe Cosgrave  Zoom on Michael Joe Cosgrave  Is the Minister telling the House he will make the money available to Dublin Corporation? Is he aware this is a tidal problem and flooding is causing major damage in Baldoyle where many houses have been flooded? When the Minister receives the information he has sought from Dublin Corporation, can he assure me that he will give the money to them?

Mr. Kavanagh: Information on Liam Kavanagh  Zoom on Liam Kavanagh  I am not in a position to give that confirmation to the Deputy until we see the engineering report from the corporation. Then I will be in a better position to answer the Deputy's question.

Dr. Woods: Information on Michael J. Woods  Zoom on Michael J. Woods  Will the Minister not confirm that the engineering report has been available for some time? Therefore, his officials should be able to make that judgment at an early date. I understand the report has been available for some time. There is a serious problem in this area and many houses are flooded in certain tidal conditions. It is a matter of extreme urgency and I ask the Minister to treat it as such.

Mr. Kavanagh: Information on Liam Kavanagh  Zoom on Liam Kavanagh  On 4 January of this year my Department asked the corporation to submit a report prepared by the city engineer or a consulting engineer setting out in detail the problems involved and indicating the corporation's proposals to deal with them. We have not had that report to date.

Dr. Woods: Information on Michael J. Woods  Zoom on Michael J. Woods  If the report is satisfactory, is there a prospect that the Minister could consider doing something about this problem this year?

Mr. Kavanagh: Information on Liam Kavanagh  Zoom on Liam Kavanagh  Certainly I will consider that. An indication has been given of the grants for roads and so on and other areas will be indicated to the corporation in respect of which money will come from my Department. I can assure the Deputy I will give consideration to this matter.
