Mr. Prendergast:
asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the widespread concern at the threat to the bovine TB and brucellosis eradication scheme being posed by the use of travelling bulls because of their unmonitored movements between farms; if he is satisfied that these bulls are subject to proper testing e.g. hygiene, etc.; if he will outline the reports of such tests; the proposals he has to ensure optimum safety and protection of taxpayers' money; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Agriculture (Mr. Deasy):
The practice of transporting bulls for service poses no serious threat to the disease eradication schemes. The bulls are tested regularly for TB and brucellosis. In addition, the procedures that have been established to monitor their movements and ensure cleansing and disinfection of transporting vehicles offer the best possible guarantee of minimising any disease risk. Movement of bulls into and out of “locked up” holdings is, of course, illegal.
