Mr. Allen:
asked the Minister for Health the number of persons awaiting neuro-surgery in each of the health board hospitals; and the average waiting period for such surgery in each health board area.
Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon):
There are three centres in the State where neuro-surgery is carried out. These are: Beaumont Hospital, Dublin; St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin; and Cork Regional Hospital. Information on the number of persons awaiting such surgery and the average waiting times is given in the following table.
| Hospital | Number of Persons on Waiting List | Average Waiting Period |
|---|---|---|
| Beaumont | 225 | 4-6 weeks |
| St. Vincent's | 187 | (Not available) |
| Cork Regional | 12 | 1 month |
| Total | 424 |
[495] These figures include patients for investigation and, if necessary, treatment.
Arrangements for the transfer of neuro-surgical services from St. Vincent's Hospital to Beaumont Hospital are at an advanced stage.
