asked the
Minister for Education
if she will give a breakdown of the £6.4 million spent on abandoned projects in 1988; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Education (Mrs. O'Rourke):
The sum of £6.4 million [140] includes the cost incurred up to 31/12/88 of suspended building projects, as well as those which have been abandoned. The total figure for abandoned projects amounts to only £420,423.

From 1987 there was a change in the way the national schools building programme was being administered. Because of the changed financial environment and the large number of acute cases needing attention any case which proceeded did so on a modified basis. Substantial savings on the building programme were achieved as a result and the number of cases needing attention was reduced greatly.
