  81.  Mr. Hogan  Information on Philip Hogan  Zoom on Philip Hogan   asked the Minister for Education  Information on Mary O'Rourke  Zoom on Mary O'Rourke   if she will initiate a scheme of EC funding to allow individual teachers and/or schools to operate a transition year for second level pupils; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education (Mrs. O'Rourke): Information on Mary O'Rourke  Zoom on Mary O'Rourke  EC funding is available for vocational preparation and training courses rather than for transition year projects as defined in the Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools. The operation of transition year projects is limited to schools which were providing them in the 1987-88 school-year and which had been providing a four-year junior cycle, followed by a two-year leaving certificate course in the 1985-86 school-year.
