Minister for the Environment
the increase, in terms of passenger kilometres, in car use since 1960.
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn):
The data collected relate to kilometres of travel by private cars. The first data collected relate to 1964 when kilometres travelled by private cars totalled 5,724 million. The corresponding figure for 1988 (last year for which data have been published) is 16,939 million.

the number of vehicles on Irish roads in 1960; and the number on Irish roads today.
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn):
The total number of mechanically propelled vehicles under current licence at 30 September 1960 and 30 September 1989 were 302,767 and 1,019,560, respectively.
