  232.  Mr. Aylward      asked the Minister for Health      when he intends to carry out the annual review on eligibility guidelines for medical cards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon):    Guidelines for issue of medical cards are reviewed towards the end of each year. The relevant guidelines for 1990 were circulated in December 1989 and came into effect on 1 January, 1990.

The following are the current guidelines:—

Single person living alone aged 66-79	81.00
Single person living alone aged 80 and over	84.50
Single person living with family aged under 66	65.00
Single person living with family aged 66-79	70.00
Single person living with family aged 80 and over	73.00
Married couple aged under 66	108.00
Married couple aged 66-79	120.00
Married couple aged 80 and over	126.50
Allowance per child under 16	12.50
Allowance for other dependants	14.00
Allowance for outgoings on house excess over	12.50
[174]Other allowance	Reasonable expenses in excess of £11 a week necessarily incurred in travelling to work
