Mr. Quinn
asked the
Minister for the Environment
if he will, in consultation with the National Archives, ensure that his Department maintain clear and comprehensive records of the current administration of Government business so that in time the transfer of such records to the National Archives will enable future generations to obtain an accurate and informed picture of the business of Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

if he will outline the archival records, contained within his Department, which have been transferred to the National Archives; the records retained and the reason for their retention; if he will further indicate when those records not specifically retained will be transferred to the National Archives; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn):
I propose to take Questions Nos. 186 and 196 together.
The necessary steps are being taken in my Department to comply with the provisions of the National Archives Act, 1986 in regard to retention, disposal or transfer to the National Archives, as [1133] appropriate, of relevant departmental records. A large volume of pre 1961 records are at present being examined in consultation with the National Archives, with a view to transferring records to the National Archives by the due date, i.e. 31 December 1990.
