Mr. Cosgrave
asked the
Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications
if he has had any meetings with members of the Private Association of Motor Bus Owners with a view to granting this association's members bus routes in Dublin city and throughout the country; the up to date position in relation to the granting of such routes to these private bus owners; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications (Mr. S. Brennan):
As [474] part of my evaluation of the various proposals in the context of the proposed Bus Competition Bill, I arranged for my Department to have full consultations with all the parties involved in the bus industry, including the Private Association of Motor Bus Owners.
Following these consultations, I am now finalising my consideration of the level of liberalisation of bus services to be provided for. All I can say at this stage is that the proposals will provide for and facilitate a considerably greater degree of competition between public and private bus operators than is possible under existing legislation.
