Dáil Éireann Debate
115. Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has had any meetings with members of the Private Association of Motor Bus Owners with a view to granting this association's members bus routes in Dublin city and throughout the country; the up to date position in relation to the granting of such routes to these private bus owners; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications (Mr. S. Brennan): As part of my evaluation of the various proposals in the context of the proposed Bus Competition Bill, I arranged for my Department to have full consultations with all the parties involved in the bus industry, including the Private Association of Motor Bus Owners.
Following these consultations, I am now finalising my consideration of the level of liberalisation of bus services to be provided for. All I can say at this stage is that the proposals will provide for and facilitate a considerably greater degree of competition between public and private bus operators than is possible under existing legislation.
