Mr. Taylor
asked the
Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications
if he will give details of any application he has received from Eircell for approval for price changes in their products; if he will outline his reply to same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications (Mr. S. Brennan):
As part of their recent package of tariff proposals, Telecom Éireann proposed to reduce call charges for the Eircell service by 10 per cent and rental charges by 20 [108] per cent. These changes would result in a reduction in revenue of about £3 million in a full year and I asked the company not to implement them as I felt that a reduction in revenue of this order would benefit a greater number of people if applied to reducing trunk call charges and expanding local call areas.
