Mr. S. Barrett
asked the
Minister for Justice
if the proposed Bill to place the civil legal aid scheme on a statutory basis will be published in the near future; if he will outline the number of new solicitors who will be employed as a result of his recent announcement to open more full-time law centres throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Justice (Mr. Burke):
I have already informed the Deputy that it is my intention to have legislation to place the scheme of civil legal aid on a statutory basis ready this year.
The new law centres which were recently announced for Letterkenny, Dundalk and Castlebar will be one-solicitor centres. Therefore, the number of new solicitors employed by the Legal Aid Board will be three. With these and other recent developments the board's overall authorised solicitor strength now stands at 39, their highest ever level.
