  152.  Mr. Sheehan  Information on P. J. Sheehan  Zoom on P. J. Sheehan   asked the Minister for the Marine  Information on David Andrews  Zoom on David Andrews   the plans, if any, he has to extend and widen the pier at Ahakista, Durus, Bantry, County Cork; if the improvements envisaged can be carried out under the 1993 financial allocation and thereby allow the fishing and tourism industry expand in that area.

Minister for the Marine (Mr. Andrews): Information on David Andrews  Zoom on David Andrews  The Department of the Marine is currently implementing the final year of its fishery harbour development programme for the period 1989 to 1993. No provision was made under this programme for development works at Ahakista Pier and in view of this, it will not be possible to carry out any works at this pier during 1993.

However, the Department of the Marine is at present drawing up a new fishery harbour development plan covering the period 1994 to 1997. To this end the various maritime local authorities were invited to make formal proposals for development works in the fisheries interests and for which they would be prepared to make funds available. Cork County Council in their submission in respect of this programme have identified Ahakista Pier among its priorities for improvement works at smaller fishery harbours. The council propose the extension of the pier at an estimated cost of £100,000. Pending finalisation of the plan and clarification of its funding, I am not in a position, at this stage, to say if it will be possible to undertake the work in question.

Cork County Council in their submission in respect of this plan have identified Baltimore as priority No. 4 on their list for improvement works. The council propose the provision of breakwater protection plus additional berthage — works which they estimate would cost in the region of £2-£3 million. However, pending finalisation of the plan and clarification of its funding, at this stage I am not in a position to say if it will be possible to undertake the work in question.

Minister for the Marine (Mr. Andrews): Information on David Andrews  Zoom on David Andrews  The question of the provision of an all-weather pier at Bank, Whiddy Island, is being considered in the context of post-1993 EC grant aid for harbour development works.
