Mr. Sargent
asked the
Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry
if he will give details of the dimensions and construction of the muzzles for coursing greyhounds as referred to in a recent debate.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry (Mr. J. Walsh):
I propose to take Questions Nos. 78, 79 and 80 together.
The phased introduction by the Irish Coursing Club, ICC, of the muzzling of greyhounds in enclosed coursing commenced at the start of the coursing season in September last on a trial basis. In the initial stage of the trials the greyhounds participating in the semi-finals and finals of all stakes were muzzled.
The dimensions and construction of muzzles are primarily matters for the ICC, the body which is conducting the trials. I understand however that at the [449] commencement of the season leather muzzles were used and that at this juncture plastic muzzles are being evaluated.
Progress will be reviewed with a view to extending the use of muzzles to more courses until all courses are run on the basis of muzzled greyhounds.
