Minister for the Environment (Mr. M. Smith): Information on Michael Smith  Zoom on Michael Smith  I propose to take Questions Nos. 17, 24, 29, 30, 31, 32, 38, 39, 45, 54 and 60 together.

The European Assembly Elections Act, 1984 specifically recognises that a person may be a candidate at a European election while holding office as Minister of State. The normal facilities available to a Minister of State in the discharge of the duties of office are provided in this situation. Under the same Act, a Minister of State ceases to hold office upon being elected to the Parliament.
