  101.  Mr. Callely  Information on Ivor Callely  Zoom on Ivor Callely   asked the Minister for Health  Information on Brendan Howlin  Zoom on Brendan Howlin   the success of the multi organ donor card scheme; the proposals, if any, he has to further promote this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Health (Mr. Howlin): Information on Brendan Howlin  Zoom on Brendan Howlin  Since the establishment of the multi-organ donor card scheme in 1989, in excess of 1.3 million donor cards have been distributed. I am satisfied that this scheme, organised by the Irish Kidney Association, has contributed significantly to the particularly favourable public attitude towards organ donation and transplantation in this country.

The Irish Kidney Association received a grant of £30,000 in both 1992 and 1993 from the health allocation of the national lottery proceeds. In recognition of the [1627] success of the association's campaign, I was pleased to increase this amount to £40,000 in the current year.
