Mr. N. Ahern
asked the
Minister for Education
if there is a special fund in 1994 to assist amateur boxing clubs with capital, running or coaching expenses; if so, the amounts allocated and other such details; if she will give details of the 1993 scheme; and if the clubs (details supplied) were and will be included.
Minister for Education (Ms Bhreathnach):
There is no special fund in 1994 to assist amateur boxing clubs with capital or running or coaching expenses. Applications from boxing clubs for capital grants are considered under the recreational facilities scheme operated by my Department. A total of £4 million has been provided for this scheme in 1994.
An application has been received from one of the clubs in question under this scheme. All applications received under [1761] the scheme are under consideration and a decision in the matter will be conveyed to the group as soon as possible.
In 1992 a special grant scheme was introduced whereby following an application process grants were awarded to individual boxing clubs for the purchase of items of equipment. Under this scheme, which was implemented in co-operation with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, grants were awarded to the clubs in question. This scheme was completed in 1993 when grants had been awarded to all clubs who had applied.
