Mr. Callely
asked the
Minister for the Environment
the truck management measures being considered to enhance traffic management in the Dublin area under the operational programme; if such measures will regulate truck movements in the city at peak travel times; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[3529/94]
Minister for the Environment (Mr. M. Smith):
Under the DTI final report, the northern port access route is to be accompanied by a truck management system. The specific measures to be applied will have to be identified on a street by street basis in parallel with the design of the route itself. In practice, measures such as the following are likely to be involved: area-wide truck bans; route guidance-signposting; weight restrictions; height restrictions; access only provisions; heavy goods vehicle exemption systems; servicing-delivery arrangements for businesses; physical width barriers and width restrictions and enforcement measures. The truck management system will only be fully implemented on completion of the northern port access route but it can be introduced on a phased basis as other elements of the DTI strategy such as sections of the C-Ring motorway are completed.
