Vol. 456 No. 6

  65.  Mr. B. O'Keeffe  Information on Batt O'Keeffe  Zoom on Batt O'Keeffe   asked the Minister for Finance  Information on Ruairí Quinn  Zoom on Ruairí Quinn   the plans, if any, he has to designate Crosshaven, County Cork, as a designated seaside town. [14550/95]

Minister for Finance (Mr. Quinn): Information on Ruairí Quinn  Zoom on Ruairí Quinn  The new renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July last for a three year period. The purpose of the scheme is to renew and update the tourist amenities and facilities in a certain limited number of seaside resorts.

I would stress that this new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of an experimental nature. It must therefore be applied to a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy.

As the Deputy will appreciate, it is not possible to designate every area of the coast for the purpose of this pilot scheme. Until this scheme is firmly established it would seem inappropriate to consider the designation of any further towns.
