Mr. Flood
asked the
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs
whether he has received an application for increased funding from the Bostonbased Irish immigration centre; if so, the plans, if any, he has to accede to this request; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[3496/96]
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Spring):
In September 1995 I announced the allocation of £150,000 ($241,500) in grants to groups in the United States which work on behalf of Irish immigrants. The Irish immigration centre in Boston received £21,428 ($34,500) which was an increase of £5,194 ($9,500) on the grant they received in 1994.
A sum of £150,000 will be available again this year to voluntary organisations in the US providing advice and counselling services to Irish immigrants. I am not in a position to indicate at this stage the organisations which will receive grants or how much they will receive.
