Dáil Éireann Debate
135. Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the proposed extension and refurbishment works at a school (details supplied) in County Galway; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12296/96]
136. Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education the current position in relation to an application made four years ago by the Board of Management of a school (details supplied) in County Galway for a permanent room for this school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12297/96]
Minister for Education (Ms Bhreathnach): The school to which the Deputy refers applied for grant-aid towards additional temporary accommodation over three years ago. My Department wrote to the school on 8 July 1993, refusing this application because projected enrolments at the time indicated the requirement for the additional accommodation would be of a short-term nature.
The school authorities subsequently purchased prefabricated accommodation without prior approval from the Department and a retrospective application to grant-aid its installation is under consideration.
On 15 May 1996, my Department received a request for a permanent extension at this school. The school's long-term accommodation requirements are now being assessed and my Department will be in touch with the school authorities.
