Mr. Leonard
asked the
Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry
the steps, if any, he has taken, in conjunction with Forbairt-IDA to ensure the recommencement of pig slaughtering in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[23014/96]
Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry (Mr. Yates):
I have been in close contact with Forbairt since the two pig slaughtering plants in the Cavan-Monaghan region closed earlier this year.
As the Deputy is aware Forbairt has been working with management with a view to securing a reopening of the plants involved on a viable basis.
However a resumption of activities at the plants is ultimately a commercial decision for the proprietors. Forbairt will, however, continue to place its resources at the disposal of management and will help in any possible way towards securing a resumption of operations.
