  308.  Mr. J. Walsh      asked the Minister for the Marine      if he will give immediate sanction for the commencement of improvement works at Bantry Bay Pier, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3828/97]

Minister for the Marine (Mr. Barrett):    Over the past number of years Exchequer funding has been allocated by my Department to Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners to assist in advancing proposed dredging works at Bantry Bay Harbour. I am not aware of any other improvements works proposed. The sediment analysis carried out on the proposed dredging material shows, however, that it is unsuitable for disposal at sea. Landfill [1276] sites are being investigated but to date no suitable site has been identified.

  309.  Mr. J. Walsh      asked the Minister for the Marine      if he will give immediate sanction to phase two of the extension to Ahakista Pier, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3829/97]

Minister for the Marine (Mr. Barrett):    This proposal is currently being discussed by the Department and Cork County Council. I expect to make a decision on the matter shortly in light of the outcome of these discussions.
