  215.  Mr. Sargent  Information on Trevor Sargent  Zoom on Trevor Sargent   asked the Minister for Social Welfare  Information on Prionsias De Rossa  Zoom on Prionsias De Rossa   if he will give a breakdown of the number of long-term unemployed receiving unemployment assistance in terms of age and gender classification; and the numbers dependent on such payments on 31 December 1996. Minister for Social Welfare (Proinsias De Rossa): Information on Prionsias De Rossa  Zoom on Prionsias De Rossa  Information on the age and gender of the long-term unemployed is derived from the live register age by duration analysis published twice yearly by the Central Statistics Office in April and October.

The following table, giving the age and gender information sought by the Deputy, relates to 18 October 1996. This group of people are in receipt of a means-tested payment — unemployment assistance — and therefore are dependent on this payment, even if they have limited income from another source.
