22.
Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny)
asked the
Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands
if she has satisfied herself with the quality of Irish placenames on streets in Dublin city; if she has consulted with the Department of the Environment and Local Government and the relevant local authorities regarding the reason there are no Irish placenames on the vast majority of new housing estates; if she will consult with An Coimisiún Logainmneacha in relation to the quality of Irish used where street and place names do exist in Irish; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
[17330/97]
Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands (Éamon Ó Cuív):
Ba bhreá liomsa go mbeadh caighdeán na Gaeilge ar chomarthaí sráide ar fheabhas agus go mbeadh ainmneacha dúchasacha agus leaganacha Gaeilge de na hainmneacha sin ar eastáit thithe. Is gnó é do na hÚdaráis Áitiúla éagsúla aghaidh a thabhairt ar na cúrsaí seo i gcomhairle, de réir mar is gá, leis an Roinn Comhshaoil agus Rialtais Áitiúil agus leis an gCoimisiúin Logainmneacha atá faoi scáth na Roinne Airgeadais.
Beidh an cheist ghinearálta seo an fad á scrúdú i gcomhthéacs an gheallúint atá tugtha ag an Rialtas maidir le ceapadh Ombudsman.
