Dáil Éireann Debate
270. Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the role, if any, he can play to resolve an ongoing dispute (details supplied) concerning school transport arrangements for two children who are attending a national school in County Meath. [5303/98]
Where a child is attending a school other than their nearest, a transport service cannot be provided unless the written agreement of the board of management of the nearest school is obtained. I understand that the board in this instance has not consented to give its written agreement.
This issue is a matter to be resolved between the board and the parents. As Minister, I am responsible for ensuring that decisions on school transport services do not unreasonably threaten the viability of existing schools, to which the State has already contributed considerable resources.
