Dáil Éireann Debate
Vol. 487 No. 7

First Page Previous Page Page of 146 Next Page Last Page

  270.  Mr. J. Bruton  Information on John Bruton  Zoom on John Bruton   asked the Minister for Education and Science  Information on Micheál Martin  Zoom on Micheál Martin   the role, if any, he can play to resolve an ongoing dispute (details supplied) concerning school transport arrangements for two children who are attending a national school in County Meath. [5303/98]

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Martin): Information on Micheál Martin  Zoom on Micheál Martin  The pupils to whom the Deputy refers live 2.3 miles from their nearest school. They are attending, and seeking transport to, a school further distant.

Where a child is attending a school other than their nearest, a transport service cannot be provided unless the written agreement of the board of management of the nearest school is obtained. [1479] I understand that the board in this instance has not consented to give its written agreement.

This issue is a matter to be resolved between the board and the parents. As Minister, I am responsible for ensuring that decisions on school [1480] transport services do not unreasonably threaten the viability of existing schools, to which the State has already contributed considerable resources.

In the circumstances, I regret that it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in this matter.
