Mitchell  Information on Gay Mitchell  Zoom on Gay Mitchell   asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform  Information on John O'Donoghue  Zoom on John O'Donoghue   if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 154 of 5 November 1998, his attention has been drawn to the fact that both unions involved in discussions relevant to the transfer of traffic wardens from his Department to Dublin Corporation have been informed by Dublin Corporation that discussions will now cease; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I wish to confirm, as indicated in reply to the Deputy's question of 5 November, that the traffic warden service will transfer to Dublin Corporation and that this transfer is planned for 1 February 1999.

As to the question of my meeting the trades unions representing traffic wardens, the position is that I have no request for any such meetings, though my Department has been in close touch with the trades unions on matters relating to the Programme for Competitiveness and Work. I am not privy to discussions between Dublin Corporation and the trades unions in question, to which the Deputy refers.
