Mr. Quinn
asked the
Minister for the Marine
and Natural Resources the proposed statutory instruments being prepared in, or under the auspices of, his Department; the proposed effect of each; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[13255/99]
Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources (Dr. Woods):
Apart from ongoing routine statutory instruments relating to the day to day management of sea fisheries, consideration is currently being given to the possible requirement for a statutory instrument to implement EC Directive No. 97/61, amending EC Directive No. 91/492 regarding the production and placing on the market of live bivalve molluscs; and an instrument to give effect to the technical amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974 Convention.
The first instrument, if necessary, would merely confirm the application of existing standards while the second provides for the updating of SOLAS which governs the safety standards to be applied in the construction and operation of sea-going ships.
