Mr. McGinley
asked the
Minister for the Environment and Local Government
if he will allocate additional resources towards Donegal county road maintenance and repairs as their condition is becoming critical.
[12995/00]
Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Dempsey):
Donegal County Council has been allocated over £15 million in central grants for non-national roads in 2000, an increase of some 44% on the initial 1997 allocation. During the same period, the discretionary maintenance grant to Donegal County Council has been increased by over 47% from £630,000 to £927,000, while the restoration maintenance grant has grown by 47% from £1.53 million, initial allocation, to £2.26 million.
In addition, Donegal County Council will assign over £3 million from its own resources this year to non-national roads, making approximately £18 million available in total to the council for non-national road maintenance and improvement. I am satisfied that this increased level of central funding, supplemented by local authorities' own resources, is providing appropriate support for the maintenance of the non-national road network in County Donegal and for its systematic and accelerated improvement.
