  398.  Mr. McGinley  Information on Dinny McGinley  Zoom on Dinny McGinley   asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government  Information on Noel Dempsey  Zoom on Noel Dempsey   if he will allocate additional resources towards Donegal county road maintenance and repairs as their condition is becoming critical. [12995/00]

Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Dempsey): Information on Noel Dempsey  Zoom on Noel Dempsey  Donegal County Council has been allocated over £15 million in central grants for non-national roads in 2000, an increase of some 44% on the initial 1997 allocation. During the same period, the discretionary maintenance grant to Donegal County Council has been increased by over 47% from £630,000 to £927,000, while the restoration maintenance grant has grown by 47% from £1.53 million, initial allocation, to £2.26 million.

In addition, Donegal County Council will assign over £3 million from its own resources this year to non-national roads, making approximately £18 million available in total to the council for non-national road maintenance and improvement. I am satisfied that this increased level of central funding, supplemented by local authorities' own resources, is providing appropriate support for the maintenance of the non-national road network in County Donegal and for its systematic and accelerated improvement.
