Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): Information on John O'Donoghue  Zoom on John O'Donoghue  I am informed by the director general of the Irish Prisons Service that alcoholic beverages are prohibited within the confines of prisons under rule 23 of the rules for the Government of prisons, 1947, except under a written order from the medical officer.

The brewing of home-made alcohol or ‘hooch' is a feature of prisons worldwide and has been found from time to time in Irish prisons.
