  166.  Dr. Upton    asked the Minister for Education and Science  Information on Michael J. Woods  Zoom on Michael J. Woods   the grants that are available for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 10. [17790/00]

Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): Information on Michael J. Woods  Zoom on Michael J. Woods  As the person to whom the Deputy refers in the question is in employment, he would not be eligible to avail himself of a grant for living expenses while undertaking a course of study. Students in the 18 to 21 age group may re-enter the education system to complete their education or repeat the leaving certificate. For those resuming their education there is no charge. For those repeating the leaving certificate an annual fee of £100 applies, but this is waived in the case of medical card holders.

The special initiatives for disadvantaged adults scheme administered by vocational education committees provides discretionary assistance towards the cost of books, travel, lunches and child care. It is open to the person in question to make an approach to the VEC for help in this area.
