104.
Mr. J. O'Keeffe
asked the
Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources
the current position regarding illegal mussel farming at Dunmanus Bay, County Cork; and the action taken since the matter was raised in Dáil Éireann on 10 December 1997.
[7063/01]
Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. Fahey):
In early 1998 the company whose unlicensed operations gave rise to the original complaints complied with the Department's instruction to remove the longlines from the site at Dooneen, Dunmanus Bay, County Cork. No further operations have been undertaken at this location since.
I am also pleased to inform the Deputy that considerable progress has been made in relation to applications for aquaculture sites in inner Dunmanus Bay and it is expected that the public consultation process will be initiated in respect of those applications within a number of weeks.
