Mr. Naughten
asked the
Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform
the discussions he has had with the Western Health Board regarding the provision of additional facilities for the treatment of prisoners at the County Hospital, Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
[9601/01]
Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue):
The Director General of the Prisons Service has informed me that he has agreed to make a financial contribution towards the cost of a building project at Roscommon County Hospital which involves the replacement of the accident and emergency department. As part of this project, a small dedicated area will be provided for the medical examination of prisoners brought under escort from Castlerea Prison to the accident and emergency department. Discussions on part funding this element of the project occurred late last year and agreement was reached to make a financial contribution apportioned to the cost of provision of the dedicated area.
