  142.  Mr. Timmins  Information on Billy Timmins  Zoom on Billy Timmins   asked the Minister for Finance  Information on Charlie McCreevy  Zoom on Charlie McCreevy   if all construction contracts under the control of his Department have in place a satisfactory safeguard to ensure that any waste material from excavation works is being disposed of in a correct manner; and if such a procedure is an entitlement in any relevant contract. Minister of State at the Department of Finance (Mr. Parlon): Information on Tom Parlon  Zoom on Tom Parlon  The disposal of waste material from excavation works on construction contracts [1203] undertaken by the Office of Public Works are carried out in accordance with the instructions of the architect/engineer or as stipulated in the contract documents. Where this is to disposal areas off-site, details of land routes, location of deposition etc. must be approved by the respective local authority.

The disposal of hazardous material, for example, asbestos, on Office of Public Works projects is normally undertaken by specialist contractors after consultation with the Health and Safety Authority, advising the respective local authority and exported for treatment, as appropriate, using licensed transhipping agents. Records of the process are maintained so as to track compliance.
