Leaders' Questions.
As we move towards St. Patrick's weekend, the world is consumed with arguments about the possibility of war on Iraq. Europe is now sharply divided on this issue. In recent weeks, I have endeavoured in...
I know that this is a difficult call for the Taoiseach to make, depending on the question he is asked. However, the Taoiseach is meeting in private with the US President tomorrow for a meeting schedul...
What is Ireland's consistent position?
If we support the United Nations and are opposed to war, can I assume that the Taoiseach will tell President Bush that, in the event of the US taking action against Iraq without a second resolution fr...
Ceisteanna – Questions. - Proposed Legislation.
Asked the minister: his legislative priorities for the remainder of the current Dáil; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Does the Taoiseach think it is appropriate that legislation should be passed through the Oireachtas when neither of its sponsoring Ministers is present? I refer to the Freedom of Information (Amendmen...
The Bill is a legislative priority because it is being rammed through by the Government—
My question refers to the priorities for the remainder of the current Dáil. The Bill is a legislative priority and is being dealt with in the Seanad although neither sponsoring Minister is present.
I am asking the Taoiseach, as somebody who has been around here for almost as long as myself, about the practicality and mechanics of dealing with legislation when neither of the sponsoring Ministers ...
It does because the Bill is a legislative priority.
The Bill which restricts citizens is being taken in the Seanad and neither sponsoring Minister is here to deal with it. What is the Taoiseach's view on that? The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law...
What about the practicality of putting legislation through with no Minister present to deal with it?
The Taoiseach does understand that—
The ruling of the Ceann Comhairle is very specific. The Bill is a legislative priority of the Government.
My question refers to the Taoiseach's legislative priorities for the remainder of the current Dáil.
One of the Taoiseach's legislative priorities is to change—
—the Freedom of Information Act.
I will abide by the ruling of the Ceann Comhairle but, with respect, one of the Taoiseach's legislative priorities is to amend the Freedom of Information Act. Both Ministers sponsoring the Bill are ou...
The Taoiseach wants to answer the question.
It does because it is a legislative priority.
It is the Taoiseach's legislative priority to change the Freedom of Information Act. The two Ministers sponsoring the Bill are away. Does the Taoiseach think this is appropriate?
I will. It is to ask the Taoiseach his legislative priorities for the remainder of the current Dáil. One of those is the amendment of the Freedom of Information Act.
It does. The Taoiseach wants to give the best kind of leadership to his Government. Is it good leadership to have an Act passing through the Seanad—
—when both sponsoring Ministers are across the water?
Does the Taoiseach think that makes for good legislation?
I will not be disruptive but I think it is very bad practice.
I want to know the practicality of—

Asked the minister: if he will report on his bilateral meetings during his attendance at the recent EU Summit in Brussels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I thank the Taoiseach for the long reply. In a rather robust exchange here some weeks ago, the Minister for Defence was taking questions on the Government's decision to buy the first of a fleet of jet...
Order of Business.
I oppose the Order of Business for a number of reasons. I raised the matter of reports coming back from committees some weeks ago. There is no facility for Members to know what the committees discusse...
I am coming to my most important point. This House should sit tomorrow. No. 4 refers to the Dáil rising.
A Cheann Chomhairle, this refers to the Dáil rising today and adjourning until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 25 March.
Some 39 Bills are listed on the Order Paper as being published or having had the heads approved. The Dáil should sit tomorrow. The Taoiseach has already said he will recall the Dáil if a war breaks ou...
The Dáil should sit again next Thursday and it may have to be recalled before then. I am opposed to the Order of Business for these reasons.
I have already made my objection to this proposal. There are 39 Bills on the Order Paper due for publication and to be brought before the House. Irrespective of the very cogent argument made by Deputy...
—and the Minister for Defence, the House should sit tomorrow and next week. We have been left under a cloud of confusion that the House might be recalled but we do not know under what circumstances. T...

It is appropriate that the House note the passing of Mr. Dick Walsh, the esteemed journalist who served the public and this House over many years in his work at The Irish Times. He used the corridors ...

I agree with that very strongly.
