Mr. Connaughton
asked the
Minister for Education and Science
if, as a matter of urgency, an application by a school (details supplied) in County Galway for grant aid to build two extra classrooms and a learning support and general practitioner room will be approved; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the number of pupils attending the school is increasing quite dramatically and that an additional teacher will be employed in 2005; if her attention has been further drawn to the gross overcrowding at the school, that there are already two prefab [558]classrooms and that an additional prefab would not be practicable or desirable; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education and Science (Ms Hanafin):
An application for grant aid towards additional accommodation has been received from the management authority of the school to which the Deputy refers. My officials are nearing completion of a review of all projects which did not proceed to construction as part of the 2004 school building programme with a view to including them as part of a multi-annual programme from 2005. The needs of the school referred to are being considered as part of this review.
I expect to provide details of this multi-annual programme before the end of the current year.
